The Gauntlet

JULIA DOUBLEDAY

AUG 23, 2023

We now know COVID is fully airborne. We also know how to control airborne disease. So why are vulnerable people still dying of hospital-acquired COVID?

People who have gone “back to normal” (ignore the existence of COVID-19) often justify their decision by pointing to their own health status as “not high risk”. Implicit in this statement is the existence of a high-risk group of people who should still be taking COVID precautions. Also implicit is the abandonment of collective care and public health, since the “back to normal” crowd places the burden of COVID precaution on disabled, immunocompromised and vulnerable people alone.

For the most part, high risk groups indeed shoulder this burden alone. They are no longer safe in public and many limit their time in critical spaces like grocery stores and pharmacies; forget going to concerts or other “inessential” activities. Millions of Long COVID patients in particular, all too aware of what a single COVID infection can do, have to expend inordinate time, energy, and money simply to continue existing in a society hellbent on infecting them again and again and again. But you might guess that healthcare settings- specifically designed to accommodate the sick and injured- are still a safe haven for vulnerable groups.

Guess again! As COVID continues to cycle through new variants and surges, hospitals are stripping away even the inadequate infection control measures they implemented at the beginning of the pandemic. Come in for heart surgery, leave with a heart-damaging virus. What a business model!

As of early 2021, it was scientifically established beyond any doubt that COVID, like TB, is a fully airborne virus. This means that it spreads and can hang in the air like smoke; it means that contrary to early public health instructions, you can indeed become infected at distances greater than six feet, and that unsealed masks like the blue surgical ones often seen in hospitals are inadequate to prevent infection. (To be clear, surgicals are far better than nothing; they are simply not the proper type of mask to best prevent infection with a fully airborne disease. For that, you need a mask that forms a seal around your nose and mouth.)

The pandemic might have been controlled in early 2020 if the WHO had defaulted to the precautionary principle and acted as if COVID-19 could be airborne. Instead they confidently announced that COVID was droplet spread- as in, spread via coughs and sneezes- and discouraged people from proper mask wearing. Their incorrect guidance also trained people to adopt measures like social distancing and hand washing, which are inadequate to control COVID, yet are still mentioned in public health guidance to this day. Even some healthcare workers remain under the impression that surgical masks are a proper tool for prevention of COVID spread, a reality that can be observed by stepping into any doctor’s office.

You might assume that the WHO had a very good reason to announce that COVID was droplet spread in 2020; I also made that incorrect assumption. In truth, the WHO and other bodies made a guess about the way COVID spread based on decades of bad science, as is fully explored in this fascinating paper, “What were the historical reasons for the resistance to recognizing airborne transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic?” I encourage you to read the entire thing, but essentially, the health establishment did not like to be challenged on something it had long considered conventional wisdom (most respiratory viruses are droplet spread), and those who dismissed those challenges additionally did not understand physics very well.

The WHO’s announcement and subsequent bad public health advice should be a major scandal, not least because there was never any solid evidence demonstrating droplet spread of COVID-19. Professor Jose-Luis Jimenez, an aerosol expert and an author on the above linked paper, goes further and notes that “[Droplet transmission] has NEVER been demonstrated directly for any disease in entire history of medicine.” The lessons of COVID could revolutionize infectious disease control, if the medical establishment would learn them. Instead, two and a half years after a watershed discovery, the medical establishment is still struggling with the game-changing revelation that most diseases thought to be “droplet-spread,” like colds and flus, are in fact fully airborne.

Infection control is a primary duty of hospitals. If you’re like me, meaning a human being with a brain and heart, you probably think allowing the leading cause of infectious disease death in the US to spread freely in hospitals is both immoral and incomprehensible. But of course, our media always sees two sides to every story. For example, we have the incredibly titled Washington Post piece, “Masks come off in the last refuge for mandates: The doctor’s office”. I want to take a moment to really appreciate the amount of bias packed into this short title. It’s not “Masks come off in the place really sick people are forced to go,” it’s not “Masks come off as patients die,” it’s not “Masks come off as disabled people avoid care.” No. It’s “Masks come off in the last refuge for mandates.” The last refuge for mandates! The hospital could more accurately be called “the last refuge for people who might die of COVID,” but no, the subject being protected by masking in hospitals was the scary right-wing buzzword mandates. Wow! Another win for freedom.

In this article about the defeat of the horrible mandates, the victims, sorry I mean patients, are framed as having one perspective about whether their doctors should purposely infect them with diseases, while the lovely professionals who simply “don’t wanna” are framed as having an equally valid point of view.

Disabled, sick, immunocompromised and vulnerable people seeking care at a hospital, have the right not to be exposed to a virus that has killed 1.1 million Americans in 3.5 years. They have the right to seek care without having to fear that their care team will quite literally kill them with a preventable illness. Practitioners, on the other hand, have no right to compare the irritation of having to wear a mask at work with the moral injury of infecting vulnerable people who then go on to die at high rates.

No one has the right to compare the inconvenience of masks with the pain of parents begging their 6-year-old child’s oncology care team to stop forcibly exposing their vulnerable daughter during hospital visits. If you are unaware, cancer patients undergoing treatment are often severely immunocompromised. Even prior to the pandemic, people did their best not to expose cancer patients to milder diseases like flus and colds. The family of the 6-year-old is considering moving to another state- if they can find one that still cares about not giving high-risk kindergarteners deadly viruses for the crime of getting cancer treatment.

While the US attempts to bury data around hospital acquired COVID infections, we fortunately have access to statistics from other parts of the world which haven’t quite reached our level of Negligent Patient Murder Conspiracy. A study in BC found that as of November 2021, 1,619 patients were infected, and 274 patients died. A rate of 16.9%. A study looking at all of the hospital acquired COVID within the NHS system found at least 69,377 cases and 14,047 deaths- a staggering rate of 20.2%. Let’s take a look at data collected only after the availability of vaccines- in 2022. Victoria Health Authority data from Australia found that that year, over 3,000 patients acquired COVID in the hospital in the province, and at least 344- just over 10%- died of their infections.

1 in 5. 1 in 10. Would you take those odds as a vulnerable patient in need of treatment?

Of course, looking only at deaths doesn’t incorporate the other negative outcomes of COVID infection, including Long COVID, new onset health problems, delayed recovery, lost income, higher medical bills, and poorer prognosis. Why should patients seeking care have to risk any or all of the above?

I can’t believe I have to say this, but infection control is not something that can happen part time, in some cases, or only during surges. As with gloves for bloodborne or hand washing for fomite transmission, protocols for airborne infection control are a set of practices implemented permanently and consistently to protect patients and healthcare workers alike. We don’t stop hand washing because norovirus cases are down. We don’t stop wearing gloves because HIV cases are down. As a doctor, if you’re arguing that you should be able to expose patients to COVID because infection control annoys you, you should not be a doctor. Find a new career. I bet you’d love denying insurance claims. I bet you’d be a natural.

Making this picture even more hair-tearingly frustrating for disabled people avoiding healthcare settings is that the counter-argument for proper airborne infection control really is nothing beyond “don’t wanna.” There is no logical argument for allowing the spread of COVID-19 in healthcare settings. There is no scientific debate about the ways in which COVID is spreading. There is no risk analysis which shows that cancer patients or people who’ve just had heart attacks should consider a COVID infection to be no big deal. There is literally no excuse for this bizarre, unscientific mistreatment of patients other than gross incompetence, institutional negligence, and systemic ableism.

I should note that in the weeks and months since I have been made aware of and worked on this issue, I have met dozens of wonderful healthcare workers who are appalled by this medieval treatment and stand in solidarity with the many patients now avoiding care. Doctors, nurses, surgeons, researchers, aerosol experts and more are on the frontlines arguing against continued violation of patient and worker rights in the form of forcible exposure. While some healthcare workers are certainly sneering at infection prevention, many others are well aware that their profession puts them at high risk for long COVID, and that even spikes in short-term illness translate to absences and staff disruptions in an industry that was already suffering prior to the pandemic. A study in Brazil found the rate of Long COVID following infection among healthcare workers to be a shocking 27%. In this 2022 article, Infection Control Today notes that Long COVID is exacerbating worker shortages in all industries, but particularly healthcare.

A recent survey from the British Medical Association found that, among doctors who contracted Long COVID, about one in five were no longer able to work due to ill health, and nearly half reported lost income. Three quarters of those surveyed attributed their infection to the workplace; the massive labor rights issues at play here have been largely ignored by most unions, with the notable exception of NNU. The nurses’ union is currently organizing to push the CDC and its infection control advisory body, HICPAC, to fully acknowledge airborne transmission as they consider loosening guidelines even further.

I had the dubious honor of attending a HICPAC meeting yesterday, where after two hours of discussion that somehow evaded the elephant in the room, public commenters were finally given an opportunity to point it out. While none of the infection control experts had mentioned either COVID or aerosol transmission, every single commenter brought up both. Armed with studies, personal experiences, and common sense, commenters pointed out the obvious as the panel squirmed. COVID is airborne. So where is the airborne infection control? Mere hours after the meeting concluded, the CDC removed access to a publicly-available recording of the session.

The reluctance to adopt proper infection control in hospitals ultimately stems, not from employees, but from the financial interests of the hospitals themselves. Proper airborne infection control isn’t limited to high-quality masks; you also need things like testing upon entry, space for isolation of positive cases and negative pressure rooms, improved indoor air quality and CO2 monitoring, and HEPA filtration. You’d need to test your staff consistently and give them paid leave when positive. All of that represents a large and costly investment; and our for-profit medical system is hardly known for its generosity nor its value for human lives.

As to the bewildering reality of practitioners who chose not to mask in their pathogen-laden workplace and continue to downplay the dangers of the virus, I would posit a psychological explanation. Since 2021, this country has been in the throes of a post-pandemic delusion that continues to disable and kill millions as COVID spreads and evolves. President Joe Biden declared the pandemic “over,” and article after article after article informed us that continual reinfection was just fine for our health. As a result, most doctors, like most other people, went “back to normal.” They sent their kids to school. They visited their parents. They traveled. And, relevantly, they watched as their loved ones were infected 2, 3, 4 or 5 times, likely on their advice and with their blessing. They are therefore, incredibly, personally, terrifyingly, invested in the hope that COVID is actually a cold.

I don’t even know how to touch on the creepy “but we need to see smiles” thing, which is better evidence of some sort of psycholgical denial at play than I could possibly invent. Patients in hospitals don’t need to see smiles to get proper medical care, obviously. They need infection control measures that prevent further illness. Is this a real argument?

Historically, doctors and the medical establishment are slow to adopt new infection control measures. If you’ve spent some time reading about the ongoing reluctance of medical bodies to acknowledge fully airborne transmission, you’re probably familiar with the story of Ignaz Semmelweis by now. An OB-GYN who observed a significant reduction in mortality when he washed his hands, he attempted to introduce hand washing to other doctors as an infection control measure. He was met with mockery and rejection by the medical community, ultimately had a nervous breakdown, and died in a mental institution. The “Semmelweis Reflex,” a phenomenon where people reflexively reject new information that would contradict their prior beliefs, is named for him.

I would characterize what is happening in hospitals- which, to put it plainly, is the murder of vulnerable people for convenience- as the point where the “back to normal” delusion collides with the inconvenient reality that vulnerable people exist in society. In any other context, it’s easy to imagine that sick, disabled and immunocompromised people can simply remove themselves from danger, or properly mask themselves for short periods of time. In the hospital setting, we have to choose. Either COVID is not very dangerous, or we’ve been purposely exposing our friends, family, loved ones and communities to a disease that disables and kills. The mental burden of the latter is impossible to accept; so some working in the hospital system default to the former. Sad though it may be, I do not believe patients should have to cosplay 2019 for their practitioner’s mental health.

Airborne infection control is not new. TB clinics implement it; nurses and doctors in TB clinics do not contract TB. Hospitals are refusing to implement COVID infection control because of the costs; many practitioners are going along because it’s hard to understand how “back to normal” could logically exist side-by-side with a healthcare system employing such stringent controls. If COVID is bad for sick people, might it be bad for everyone? If hospitals have to expend such resources to control infections, maybe schools should be doing so. If schools are doing it, why not workplaces? Or public transit? It’s almost like controlling infections in hospitals would challenge the comforting narrative that constant COVID reinfection is just dandy for your health. So we pretend it’s 2019. We pretend COVID is a cold. And our collective fantasy of “normality” continues to sicken and kill those who seek care.

  • Long COVID. Shorter Life? New research reveals an arduous road to recovery

With or without a declaration from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 cases continue to rise. Fortunately, the number and severity of those new cases is nowhere near the terrible peaks of the past three years, and deaths are very low. But that’s not the whole story.

Practically since the term “long COVID” was coined, anecdotal evidence and shorter-term studies indicated that the often-debilitating condition would not only affect significant numbers of people (roughly 15% of all U.S. adults have experienced long COVID symptoms) but also that it might do so in the most serious ways.

We’re beginning to see the severity of that issue. According to a paper published today in Nature Medicine, the physical fallout from long COVID may last two years or longer–and it can take a toll on quality of life even for those whose initial cases didn’t require hospital care.

“I think this is a sobering reminder that SARS COV-2 infection can have long-lasting risks on people even among the non-hospitalized, that they really need to consider this data very seriously,” Ziyad Al-Aly, a clinical epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis and the senior author of the study, told me in an interview. “I mean, this is data at two years. This is not like six months or a year out.”

A long risk horizon

The study, conducted in coordination with the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care system, found that those who contracted COVID-19 but didn’t require hospitalization were still at elevated risk two years later for several conditions, including diabetes, lung problems, fatigue, blood clots, and disorders affecting the gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal systems. Those whose initial cases required hospitalization within the first 30 days faced more dire outcomes, with elevated risk for both hospitalization and death, along with significant risk across all organ systems.

Al-Aly and his team analyzed about 6 million anonymous medical records in a database maintained by the V.A., and created a control set of people who from March through December of 2020 either never tested positive for COVID, tested positive but weren’t hospitalized, or tested positive and required hospitalization.

Two years out, those who’d tested positive for the virus but didn’t need hospitalization were still at elevated risk for 31% of 80 long COVID-related conditions, although their risk of death and hospitalization diminished to levels roughly the same as those who’d never tested positive. For people who had required hospitalization for their cases, the risk of death and another hospitalization remained elevated, along with 65% of the long-COVID related conditions.

Like any study, this one has parameters. For one thing, because Al-Aly wanted to study the longer-term effects of the virus, his team analyzed data of patients from the earlier stages of the pandemic. The researcher says the subsequent development of vaccines and antivirals might produce different results in a study of people who were infected more recently.

In many ways, though, that’s the point. Most of the research pertaining to long COVID has concentrated on shorter-term benchmarks: six months or one year. As the Nature Medicine paper makes it clear, science is just beginning to understand how long the tentacles of the disease may reach.

At two years post-infection, the non-hospitalized group was at 27% higher risk than the non-COVID control group for ischemic stroke, 23% higher risk of a clotting disorder, 37% higher risk for headaches, and 250% higher risk for still having loss of smell, among many other sequelae. Those who were hospitalized had a 29% higher risk for death and a 257% higher risk for hospitalization, even at two years, and dramatically higher chances of diabetes, Alzheimer’s, low oxygen, and memory loss, the study found.

Al-Aly and his team also quantified the risk in terms of disability-adjusted life years, or DALY. One DALY, Al-Aly says, is equal to one less year of healthy life. In the non-hospitalized COVID-19 group, the research found about 80 DALYs per 1,000 people. For the hospitalized group, that number shot up to 642 DALYs per 1,000. By comparison, cancer and heart disease in the U.S. claim 50 and 52 healthy-life years lost per 1,000 people, respectively.

“It’s a difficult and protracted road for recovery in people who were hospitalized to start with,” Al-Aly says. “But most importantly, even for people who are not hospitalized, it is still a long risk horizon for many, many sequelae and multiple organ systems.”

‘An empty white box’ of validated treatments

The research should shine new light on the subject of long COVID, which has generally been understudied in the U.S. despite the large number of adults who’ve already been affected by it. Eric Topol, the scientist and vice president at Scripps Research in San Diego, has written extensively about long COVID and told me he does not believe the CDC and federal government are taking it seriously enough.

Topol, who was not involved in the St. Louis study, says it provides “important new evidence of the durable multi-system sequelae of long COVID.” When I asked whether the public really understands the long-term risks associated with the disease, he replied, “No, only the people affected and their friends and families.”

How the findings of the St. Louis study might translate to a younger population remains unknown. Almost by definition, the V.A. sample skews older and male. Al-Aly says it’s one reason the study pulled from the pool of 6 million, which included more than 600,000 women. “Those could fill like six Taylor Swift stadiums,” he says, “So it’s not a small number.” About 20% of the medical records were from Black patients, and the study included multiple ages and races.

And all of the information is more than the CDC has–or any governing body, for that matter. Very few studies of this longitude have been completed, and none at this scale.

Al-Aly says one of his hopes is that the St. Louis study will prompt a closer look on the governmental level at the ways clinical trials for long COVID treatments can be initiated–now. “We need to have a coherent national strategy to accelerate clinical trials and get a treatment that works as soon as possible,” the researcher says. “That really should be a national priority. The patient community has been waiting so long, and we need to find treatments as soon as possible.”

He’d also like to see studies like this one reproduced in other countries, especially since the limited work that’s been done so far has essentially replicated the results found in the St. Louis research. Those results are serious enough, and long-lasting enough, that they ought to grab the attention of national policymakers the world over–and the U.S. should take the lead.

Where are the long COVID treatment trials?  A recent report by the health news site STAT revealed that the National Institutes for Health has failed to test meaningful treatments for long COVID after two and a half years and a $1.15 billion Congressional grant. Topol, meanwhile, has repeatedly used an empty white box to depict the number of validated treatments we have from well-designed randomized trials.

So great is the urgency that researchers like Topol are advocating for digital clinical trials in which the patients don’t have to leave home–a critical need, considering that some long COVID sufferers can barely get out of bed. Whether the federal government can move to such a system to produce treatments remains to be seen–but about the extended effects of long COVID, we no longer have much doubt.

78th anniversary of US atomic bombing of Hiroshima: In 2023, socialism or barbarism - World Socialist Web Site

 EXCERPT:

The very existence of these weapons of mass destruction has posed the grave danger that at some point, in a time of intense crisis, they would be used, against foreign foes or even domestic opposition.

The anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing and the release of Oppenheimer, which has obviously struck a disturbing chord with audiences (the film has passed $550 million in global box office), have to be seen in the context of present-day developments.

The Biden administration and its NATO allies have all but openly repudiated the MAD doctrine, repeatedly arguing that they will not be “deterred” by the danger of nuclear war. This goes unchallenged, it is even applauded, by the US and European media. Such pronouncements came in response to concerns that the US was “so worried about nuclear weapons and World War III that we have allowed ourselves to be fully deterred,” in the words of Philip Breedlove, a retired four-star US Air Force general who led US forces in Europe and served as NATO’s supreme allied commander from 2013 to 2016.

The notion that the US is no longer “worried about nuclear weapons and World War III” can only mean, if language has any significance, that the American ruling elite intends to pursue its ruthless, predatory objectives regardless of the consequences. Not merely the possibility, but the inevitability of nuclear annihilation will not forestall the US government, or the governments of France, Britain and the NATO powers.

Total recklessness now prevails in ruling circles.

This is where we have arrived, 78 years after the Hiroshima catastrophe. In terms of bourgeois society, there is vast social, political and moral regression. The alternatives today are socialism or barbarism, the working class taking power or capitalism putting an end to human existence.

The pandemic’s true death toll: Our daily estimate of excess deaths around the world | Graphic detail

Excerpt -- [wonderful graphics at original that I could not capture--Linda]

How many people have died because of the covid-19 pandemic? The answer depends both on the data available, and on how you define “because”. Many people who die while infected with SARS-CoV-2 are never tested for it, and do not enter the official totals. Conversely, some people whose deaths have been attributed to covid-19 had other ailments that might have ended their lives on a similar timeframe anyway. And what about people who died of preventable causes during the pandemic, because hospitals full of covid-19 patients could not treat them? If such cases count, they must be offset by deaths that did not occur but would have in normal times, such as those caused by flu or air pollution.

Netanyahu’s Judicial Coup and the Dead End of Zionism - World Socialist Web Site

Netanyahu’s judicial coup and the dead end of Zionism - World Socialist Web Site

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government passed legislation Monday giving itself untrammeled power, in the face of mass popular opposition unprecedented in Israel’s history.

The new law ends the Supreme Court’s power to strike down the decisions of elected officials on the grounds of “unreasonableness,” granting the Knesset the power to overturn the Court’s ruling with a simple majority. At a stroke, this removes any separation of powers between the legislature, the executive and the judiciary.

From now on the government can politicize the selection of judges, appoint convicted criminals to the highest offices of the state and allow Netanyahu, currently on trial on corruption charges that could put him behind bars for years, to evade conviction.

In the Supreme Court, Netanyahu is targeting an institution that has repeatedly colluded in the brutal suppression of the Palestinians, shielded settler violence and presided over the 2018 Nation State Law defining Israel as “the national home of the Jewish people” and confirming its Arab population as second-class citizens.

Even this is not enough for Netanyahu’s government of ultra-nationalists and religious Zionists. Their aims are the total annexation of the Occupied West Bank, ethnic cleansing throughout Israel and the imposition of authoritarian rule over a society characterized by acute social inequality, stepped up militarism and cultural reaction.

The prospect of such measures has sparked an existential crisis for the State of Israel, igniting seven months of demonstrations, mobilizing hundreds of thousands of people amid scenes of vicious police attacks on demonstrators. Speaking on Britain’s Channel 4 television, former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert now warns, “This is a serious threat. It’s never happened before, and we are going into a civil war now.”

A striking feature of the oppositional wave is the announcement by more than 10,000 army reservists that they will refuse to serve if the judicial coup goes ahead, saying they are unwilling to continue risking their lives for a government that is no longer democratic.

The army demands several years of military service for young Jewish Israelis and annual reservist duty. For 56 years, military service has meant enforcing Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian and Syrian land, carrying out search and arrest raids, forced evictions, demolitions and other punitive measures as well as providing cover for settlers carrying out vigilante attacks.

The reservists’ refusal to serve reflects growing concern among workers and professional middle-class layers over the far-right and extremist settlers’ efforts to provoke an all-out war against the Palestinians, even as Netanyahu steps up the covert war against Iran and its allies in Syria and Lebanon. It takes place under conditions where Israel is a social and political powder keg and the entire Middle East has been destabilised by the deepening global economic crisis, the pandemic, climate change and US-led plans to escalate the war against Russia in Ukraine and its regional allies, Iran and Syria, with Tel Aviv as its chief attack dog. This prompted IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi to warn that without “a strong and united defence force,” Israel would “no longer be able to exist as a country in the region.”

These are the concerns animating the self-proclaimed leaders of the opposition to Netanyahu’s judicial coup—former ministers, generals and security and intelligence chiefs. The opposition leaders are no less committed to the expansion of Israel’s borders at the expense of the Palestinians, but they fear the turn to open dictatorship will jeopardise the interests of Israel’s corporate and financial elite and have begged Netanyahu to “compromise.”

Israel has long depended for its survival on massive economic and military support from the United States, particularly after its success against the Arab armies in 1967, in return for acting as US imperialism’s policeman in the Middle East. Now, instead of being an effective policeman, Netanyahu’s actions have undermined Washington’s protracted efforts to secure alliances with Arab regimes in the Middle East, threatening its plans to isolate and crush Iran and exposing the fraud of its claim to be upholding democracy in waging its de facto war against Russia in Ukraine.

In addition, the prospect of protracted social upheaval in Israel and throughout the region has spooked international investors, with Morgan Stanley cutting its sovereign credit to a “dislike stance” and credit rating agency Moody’s warning of “negative consequences” and “significant risk” for Israel’s economy and security.

The vast outpouring of opposition to the government has, crucially, politically discredited the fraudulent claims of those equating criticism of Israel with antisemitism. This has undermined a global witch-hunt of the left to silence and discredit opponents of Israel’s repression of the Palestinians and the broader war aims of the state’s imperialist backers.

It has at the same time refuted the central tenet of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Campaign blaming all Israelis for the crimes of their government. Citing the pro-Zionist leadership of the protest movement, numerous pseudo-left and liberal publications have insisted that all that is happening is a fall-out between rival Zionist cliques and that Jewish workers can never be won to united struggle with the Palestinians because they are loyal to the “settler colonial state” which provides them with a supposedly privileged existence.

There are complex problems in developing a genuine socialist opposition to Netanyahu’s fascistic agenda. But the working class—Israeli and Palestinian, Jewish, secular, Muslim and Christian—is being objectively driven into struggle against the ruling class and its state apparatus.

What is necessary is for the working class and its younger generation to draw the central political lessons of the history of Israel since its foundation.

The central myths of the Zionist project have been dealt a body blow from which they will never recover. Nothing is left of the insistence on “national unity” on which Zionism rests. The claim that its establishment 75 years ago through the forcible expulsion of the Palestinians would provide a democratic haven for the Jewish people after the horrors of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust has turned into a nightmare.

Zionism emerged as a right-wing ethno-nationalist movement in the 19th century based on exclusivist conceptions of racial, religious and linguistic separatism to justify the establishment of a Jewish capitalist state. The growth of its influence among a people deeply rooted in the Enlightenment and then the socialist movement was due to the catastrophe that overtook European Jewry in the 1930s and 1940s, culminating in the extermination of 6 million European Jews in the Nazi Holocaust. This defeat of the European working class by fascism was facilitated by the Stalinist degeneration of the Soviet Union and the Communist International, and the Soviet bureaucracy’s betrayal of the struggle for world socialism.

Zionism politically exploited the widespread political disillusionment among Jews to urge the creation of a Jewish state through emigration to British-controlled Palestine. Israel was established in 1948 through the forcible and brutal expulsion of almost a million Palestinians and the seizure of their land.

A state founded on this basis and the ongoing repression of the Palestinians was always incapable of developing a genuinely democratic society. Its evolution as a garrison state for US imperialism, repeatedly at war with its Arab neighbours and in perpetual war with the Palestinians; pursuing an expansionist “Greater Israel” policy; resting ever more firmly on the right-wing settler population in the Occupied Territories and US military subventions to offset the destabilising impact of acute levels of social inequality among the highest in the world, is what has paved the way for the Frankenstein monster of Netanyahu’s government.

The conditions have now emerged for a successful struggle to win the entire working class, Jewish and Palestinian, to a unified socialist struggle against their common oppressor. This perspective has been fought for solely by the Fourth International, represented today by the International Committee.

At the outset of the ongoing wave of protests the World Socialist Web Site drew attention to the prescient response by the Fourth International to the partition of Palestine in 1947 by the United Nations that led to the creation of Israel, in a statement, “Against the Stream.” This warned:

The Fourth International rejects as utopian and reactionary the “Zionist solution” of the Jewish question. It declares that total renunciation of Zionism is the sine qua non condition for the merging of Jewish workers’ struggles with the social, national and liberationist struggles of the Arab toilers…

By partition a wedge is driven between the Arab and Jewish worker. The Zionist state with its provocative lines of demarcation will bring about the blossoming forth of irredentist (revenge) movements on either side. There will be fighting for an “Arab Palestine” and for a “Jewish state” within the historic frontiers of Eretz Israel (the Land of Israel). As a result, the chauvinistic atmosphere thus created will poison the Arab world in the Middle East and throttle the anti-imperialist fight of the masses, while Zionists and Arab feudalists will vie for imperialist favours.

The WSWS explained:

The dead-end of Zionism is only one manifestation of the failure of all national movements and the states they have created to resolve any of the fundamental questions confronting the mass of working people. The same issues are posed to all the peoples of the region, where the working class is subject to brutally repressive forms of bourgeois rule amid grotesque levels of social inequality.

Nor is there anything unique in the eruption of opposition. Israel is a significant expression of the far-reaching political consequences of a global upsurge of the working class, from Sri Lanka to France.

As elsewhere, the turn by Israel’s ruling elite toward dictatorship is rooted fundamentally in the extreme growth of social inequality and the escalation of war that are the twin products of capitalism in its death agony. It will be halted not through the “negotiations” between rival capitalist factions, but by developing the expanding class struggle throughout the world into a conscious political movement for socialism.

The critical task facing workers and youth is the building of independent revolutionary parties, sections of the ICFI, including an Israeli-Palestinian section, to provide the political leadership to overthrow the Zionist state and the Arab bourgeois regimes and build a United Socialist States of the Middle East.

Historical Falsification in the Service of Pro-War Propaganda - World Socialist Web Site

Historical falsification in the service of pro-war propaganda - World Socialist Web Site

 Excerpt:

It is within this context that Kramer [NYTIMES] puts forth the astonishing claim that World War II started with the Soviet Union’s invasion of Poland. He writes:

World War II began in what is now Ukraine in 1939 with a Soviet invasion into territory then controlled by Poland in western Ukraine, at a time when the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were in a military alliance. When that pact broke down in 1941, Germany attacked and fought from west to east across Ukraine.

This assertion is a violation of the basic chronology of the war. World War II began not with the Soviet entry into the eastern one-third of Poland on September 17, 1939 but with the Nazi blitzkrieg against the country’s eastern two-thirds on September 1, 1939.

The Times, confronted with a flood of hostile letters, cynically altered the sentence, without explanation, and in a manner that perpetuates the aim of the original falsification. The sentence was changed to read, “World War II reached what is now Ukraine in 1939 with a Soviet invasion into territory then controlled by Poland in western Ukraine…” The surreptitious verb swap does nothing to alter Kramer’s intention. The reader is meant to believe that the Soviet Union “started” WWII.

Flattening the Curve - John Snow Project:

EXCERPT:

In that critical period, when experience of the SARS-CoV-1 outbreak told us containment should have been the sensible response, the public was subjected to a barrage of minimizing and obfuscating messages, and containment wasn’t even attempted.

***

By meekly conceding to follow such a policy approach, instead of insisting on a real solution to the problem, which would have involved proper containment the way SARS-1 was contained back in 2003, society agreed on previously unimaginable levels of death and disability, in perpetuity.

Writer Who Defended Hitler on Twitter Fired By Seattle Times After One Column

Writer Who Defended Hitler on Twitter Fired By Seattle Times After One Column

Lenin statue in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood, Washington...

Above is the famous Lenin statue in Fremont (Seattle).  Mr. Volodzko wanted it destroyed.  Linda

The Seattle Times has fired recently-hired columnist David Volodzko after he wrote one piece for the paper. Volodzko was a member of the Times' editorial board -- briefly -- and was let go on Thursday, a day after he tried to "well, actually" Adolf Hitler's track record of evil.

Here's the statement issued by the paper:

pic.twitter.com/nYUtPtBAWJ

— Seattle Times Co. (@SeattleTimesCo) July 13, 2023

The paper's newest scribe wrote a column about the famous statue of Vladimir Lenin in Seattle and why it should be removed (it's on private property, FYI). After the column was published, he took to Twitter and claimed Hitler was less-evil than Lenin because, according to Volodzko, Hitler only targeted people he believed were harmful to society, while Lenin even targeted people he believed were not. Which -- you know what, let's not even get into a debate over that.

Here are two of his now-deleted tweets:

Record-setting fastest “you gotta hand it to Hitler” tweet from a newly hired member of a metro newspaper’s editorial board pic.twitter.com/3oizeueo4r

— Dan Nguyen (@dancow) July 12, 2023

When someone pointed out how stupid that belief was, Volodzko attempted to further defend himself and things got worse:

"why do you bring up genocide when I am simply trying to defend Hitler???" pic.twitter.com/cIHiiMepDm

— Dan Nguyen (@dancow) July 12, 2023

The man wrote one column for the paper after being hired, then in record time defended Hitler's track record on Twitter. The speed at which it happened is simply incredible.

Some advice for all of our readers who plan to engage polite society, Rule No. 1: Never defend Hitler or attempt to minimize his level of evil.

Vilnius NATO Summit Unveils Plans for Global Domination--World Socialist Website

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2023/07/13/nuwl-j13.html

Conclusion--(NATO has become THE BORG)

As with every document produced by the imperialist powers, the NATO communique is rife with hypocrisy. The US and European powers talk about defending national “sovereignty and territorial integrity,” when they themselves have launched wars of aggression in every corner of the globe. They insist on the absolute right of Ukraine to choose its “strategic partners”—that is, to join NATO—but deny that right to China and Russia. They insist on the right of NATO to provide unlimited arms to Ukraine but treat any military assistance to Russia as a veritable act of war.

When the document speaks of upholding a “rules-based international order,” this means an “order” in which every country must do the bidding of the imperialist powers, above all, the United States.

To this end, the “North Atlantic” Treaty Organization has been transformed into a Frankenstein monster that asserts its interests and “values” in every part of the globe. “The Black Sea region is of strategic importance for the Alliance,” the communique states. “The Middle East and Africa are regions of strategic interests. … The Indo-Pacific is important for NATO.”

On what map, one might ask, does North Africa and the Middle East, let alone the Indo-Pacific, touch the shorelines of the North Atlantic?

Even in the Arctic, in outer space and in cyberspace, NATO wants to ensure “security.” A cyberattack can serve as a pretext for war: “A single or cumulative set of malicious cyber activities could reach the level of armed attack and could lead the North Atlantic Council to invoke Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, on a case-by-case basis.” Article 5 obligates all NATO members to provide assistance to a member under military attack.

Particularly ominous in the document are the repeated references to nuclear war, which has entered into the calculations of the imperialist war planners. “We will individually and collectively deliver the full range of forces, capabilities, plans, resources, assets and infrastructure needed for deterrence and defence, including for high-intensity, multi-domain warfighting against nuclear-armed peer-competitors,” it states. “Accordingly, we will strengthen training and exercises that simulate conventional and, for Allies concerned, a nuclear dimension of a crisis or conflict, facilitating greater coherence between conventional and nuclear components of NATO’s deterrence and defence posture across all domains and the entire spectrum of conflict.”

The document exposes the political bankruptcy of the strategy of the Putin regime, which has pursued a policy aimed at putting pressure on the imperialist powers for “security guarantees.” But the US and European imperialist powers do not want compromise, they want world domination. Despite the obvious failure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, the United States and NATO will do everything in their power to perpetuate the war no matter how many Ukrainians are killed. Russia has been drawn into a trap from which it can find no exit. The longer the conflict drags on, the greater the pressure on the Putin regime to either escalate or capitulate. Within the framework of the capitalist-based politics of the regime, there is no palatable middle ground to be found.

But the policies of NATO, as they find expression in the Vilnius Communique, have a thoroughly delusional and reckless character. The grandiose plans for world conquest and domination stem from the crisis of global capitalism. For more than 30 years, the US, supported by its European “partners,” has tried to make up for the decline of its economic dominance through military force—with devastating consequences for Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and numerous other countries.

They have only one answer to the incompatibility of the social and international character of modern production, on the one hand, and private property and the nation-state, on which capitalism is based, on the other: the violent redivision of the world under their domination. This was already the cause of the First and Second World Wars.

The war plans of the imperialist powers will enormously escalate the growth of social conflict. The document pledges all the signatories to commit “at least 2% of our Gross Domestic Product” on war. However, it states, “in many cases, expenditure beyond 2% of GDP will be needed in order to remedy existing shortfalls and meet the requirements across all domains arising from a more contested security order.”

And who will pay for it? The escalation of war abroad is at the same time the escalation of the assault on the social programs, wages and jobs of the vast majority of the population, the working class.

The summit participants are well aware of this. Throughout the document, there are veiled references to internal conflict. It refers to the need to “boost our national and collective ability to ensure continuity of government,” “enable civil support to military operations” and “promote societal resilience.” The document even refers to the possibility of using Article 5 against domestic opponents of governments—“non-state actors”—that “target our political institutions, our critical infrastructure, our societies, our democratic systems, our economies, and the security of our citizens.”

NATO’s claim to impose its will on the whole world, as formulated in the Vilnius summit document, borders on madness. But it is the madness of a ruling class with its back against the wall. For all their saber-rattling and threats, the members of NATO held their summit in Vilnius under conditions of extreme crisis. The ruling elites of the major imperialist powers are trying desperately to hold everything together, including between themselves and within their own governments. Above all, they confront growing social opposition in the working class.

The end of war will come only through the fusing of the developing struggles of the working class with opposition to imperialism. The objective conditions for such a movement are developing rapidly. This year has already seen mass protests and strikes in the US, France, Germany, the UK and all the major capitalist countries. All the governments overseeing the escalation of war are despised, and there is massive latent opposition to war in the international working class.

The task is to make this objective movement politically conscious, to develop within the working class an understanding of the need to connect the fight against inequality and exploitation with the fight against imperialist war and the capitalist nation-state system. We urge all those who agree with this perspective to join and build the International Committee of the Fourth International and its sections, the Socialist Equality Parties.

NATO Summit in Vilnius: War Plotting at the site of a Historic Crime - World Socialist Web Site

NATO summit in Vilnius: War plotting at the site of a historic crime - World Socialist Web Site

EXCERPT:

In the aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the new Lithuanian bourgeoisie promoted the rehabilitation of its Nazi-collaborating ancestors. While occasionally issuing, for reasons of political expediency, pro forma and callous statements of official regret over the extermination of Lithuanian Jewry, the government and major parties minimized and covered up the scale of the crimes committed between 1941 and 1945.

As one of its first acts, the new Lithuanian parliament rehabilitated Lithuanians convicted of collaboration with the Nazis by the Soviet government. Streets were named after LAF leaders like Škirpa. Lithuania’s state-run Military Academy, which is affiliated with other NATO military academies, was named after Jonas Žemaitis, another infamous Nazi collaborator. Meanwhile, Holocaust survivors who fought with the Soviet partisans against the Nazis and their Lithuanian allies were put on trial for “collaboration” and “war crimes.”

The case of the Lithuanian fascist Jonas Noreika has acquired international notoriety. Executed in the Soviet Union after the war, he was posthumously celebrated by the post-1991 Lithuanian regime as a fighter against “communist tyranny.” Streets were renamed in his honor, and Noreika was awarded the Cross of Vytis, the highest honor bestowed by Lithuania upon a deceased person. But in the year 2000 Noreika’s granddaughter came across long concealed family documents that revealed that he had “ordered all Jews in his region of Lithuania to be rounded up and sent to a ghetto where they were beaten, starved, tortured, raped and then murdered.” [Op-ed published on January 27, 2021 in the New York Times, “No More Lies. My Grandfather Was a Nazi,” by Silvia Foti]

Despite these revelations, Noreika is still honored in Lithuania as a national hero. A memorial plaque honoring his memory remains in place at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. A documentary denouncing this travesty of historical truth, titled J’Accuse, has been recently completed and was viewed in December 2022 at the Miami Jewish Film Festival.

The Bankruptcy of DSA Politics: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Endorses Biden Reelection - World Socialist Web Site

The bankruptcy of DSA politics: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez endorses Biden reelection - World Socialist Web Site

Conclusion:

If only the Senate rules could be changed to prevent the minority of Republicans from blocking liberal legislation propounded by Biden and the Democrats, she suggested, the United States would bloom like a garden. She did not bother to note that it was Senate Democrats who refused to limit the filibuster and that Biden himself supported this decision because he was seeking bipartisan agreement with the Republicans, along with his stated aim of maintaining a “strong Republican Party.”

Most importantly, Ocasio-Cortez said nothing at all about the central policy of the Democratic Party and the Biden administration—the war in Ukraine against Russia. The administration and congressional Democrats have repeatedly backed new arms packages to Ukraine, expanding the scope of the war and escalating the risks of a full-scale military confrontation between the United States and Russia, threatening the world with the prospect of a nuclear holocaust.

The cost of the war is being placed squarely on the backs of American working people, in terms of cuts in social spending and attacks on democratic rights, beginning with the right to strike.

In December, Congress approved the legislation banning a rail strike, including the votes of AOC and two other DSA Democrats. Biden’s Department of Labor is now moving to impose a sellout deal on the West Coast longshore workers and to block a strike by 340,000 UPS workers at the end of this month. Within days, Biden is expected to announce the appointment of a White House representative to oversee the auto industry contract negotiations. In each case, Biden has relied on the union bureaucracies, backed by the DSA, to block any struggle by the rank and file, while readying the use of federal coercion through legislation or injunctions if they fail to do so.

Ocasio-Cortez is now the dean of a growing faction of Democratic members of Congress linked to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). She is regularly given a platform on the Sunday television interview programs. AOC is also moving up within the leadership of the House Democratic Caucus.

Representative Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Governance Committee, has named her as his deputy, an indication of his political confidence that she will cause no trouble to the Biden administration should the Democrats regain the majority in the House of Representatives.

US Media Covers up Israeli War Crimes in Jenin

 https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2023/07/07/ayja-j07.html

A United Nations panel of human rights experts issued a statement Wednesday condemning Israeli military operations in Jenin and elsewhere on the West Bank, declaring they “amount to egregious violations of international law and standards on the use of force and may constitute a war crime.”

The three-member group, which operates under the aegis of the UN Human Rights Commission, pointed to a series of actions by the Israeli military which had resulted in “killing and seriously injuring the occupied population, destroying their homes and infrastructure, and arbitrarily displacing thousands.”

The two-day attack on the large, semi-permanent refugee camp outside Jenin, with 14,000 residents, led to pitched battles with Palestinian militants and deliberate and widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, including water and electricity supplies and healthcare facilities. At least 12 Palestinians were killed, including four teenagers. More than 100 were injured, and one-quarter of the camp’s population was forced to flee.

Eyewitnesses, including journalists, described both houses and larger structures destroyed by the Israel Defense Forcea (IDF), which sent 1,000 soldiers, most drawn from elite commando units, into the densely populated residential area.

According to the UN panel, “The attacks were the fiercest in the West Bank since the destruction of the Jenin camp in 2002.” They included air strikes, the first in two decades. The healthcare system was a particular target, with multiple reports of ambulances being prevented from evacuating the wounded, and IDF troops firing tear gas into Jenin General Hospital.

“The attacks constitute collective punishment of the Palestinian population, who have been labelled a ‘collective security threat’ in the eyes of Israeli authorities,” the UN panel said. “The Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory are protected persons under international law, guaranteed of all human rights including the presumption of innocence... They cannot be treated as a collective security threat by the occupying Power, all the more while it advances the annexation of occupied Palestinian land, and displacement and dispossession of its Palestinian residents.”

In the American media, however, there is virtually no mention of the actual conditions on the ground in Jenin, or of the findings of the UN panel. The reporting on the Israeli operation has generally been limited to rehashing claims that its purpose was “counter-terrorism.” The Washington Post devoted a single sentence to the UN panel’s condemnation of the Israeli operation as a violation of international law. The New York Times wrote nothing at all. The television networks were equally silent.

Here is the brutal reality in the West Bank under Israeli occupation: ongoing and systematic violence and repression against the Palestinians. Both Israeli soldiers and ultra-right settlers are murdering people, shooting them down, destroying their homes, pillaging the land where they have lived for centuries.

The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a coalition of right-wing parties, including outright fascists, with a large base in the illegal settlements on the West Bank. The regime is preparing for the logical conclusion of this campaign of terror and murder: the forcible displacement of millions of Palestinians, and the incorporation of the West Bank into Israel.

Leaders of the fascist parties speak openly of their determination to remove the entire Arab population of the West Bank and annex the territory. In this, they are modeling themselves on the pogroms against Arabs which accompanied the foundation of Israel in 1947-48. This campaign, which today would be called “ethnic cleansing,” transformed an Arab-majority territory of Palestine into a Jewish-majority state of Israel.

The Israeli aggression on the West Bank is taking place with the full approval of the US government. The Biden administration certainly green-lighted the operation in advance, and voiced approval of it after the fact. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Wednesday, “We have said this many times: We support, certainly, Israel’s security and right to defend its people against Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and other terrorist groups… Israel is a close ally and partner, and we are in touch with the national security and, certainly, the defense officials. So don’t have anything to read out on our conversation, but we are in regular contact.”

The coverage in the corporate media took its cue from Biden in its indifference to the barbarism displayed by Israel on the West Bank, where military violence has been combined with rampages by armed settlers against Palestinian towns and villages to enforce the increasingly stifling grip of the occupation regime. At least 155 Palestinians have been killed by soldiers and settlers so far this year, the largest total since the second intifada in 2002.

Meanwhile, the media witch-hunts anyone who criticizes the conduct of the state of Israel, condemning them as anti-Semites. This is especially directed against public figures, most recently the musician Roger Waters, founder of the rock band Pink Floyd, who has been a principled supporter of the Palestinian people for many decades, and now is one of the few prominent opponents of the US-NATO war in Ukraine.

The American media maintains a shameless double standard in relation to the war in Ukraine and the ongoing attacks on Palestinians living in the West Bank. While covering up Israeli violence and dispossession in the occupied territories, the media has been engaged for more than a year in a hysterical campaign claiming the Russian military is engaging in genocidal crimes in Ukraine.

There is no reason to disguise or excuse the brutality of the Putin regime, which represents the interests of the oligarchy of capitalist billionaires who built their fortunes on the dismantling of the Soviet Union. But the same standard should apply to the Ukrainian regime of President Volodymyr Zelensky, riddled with fascists and worshippers of the Nazi stooge Stepan Bandera. And it should apply as well to the crimes of the state of Israel, long the principal ally of American imperialism in the Middle East.

Neither the New York Times nor the Washington Post bothered to comment editorially on the Israeli onslaught in Jenin, although such an operation by a regime at odds with the US government would have provoked strident denunciation.

The day before the attack, the Post published an editorial with the headline, “Hold Russia accountable for its war crimes.” It cited the findings of an array of UN and human rights organizations about Russian actions in Ukraine—the same type of evidence that it ignores or dismisses when it comes to the Israeli operation in Jenin.

The editorial draws the remarkable conclusion that in addition to specific atrocities, “In fact, Mr. Putin and a coterie of his top advisers have committed a broader offense by unleashing the war in the first place—the crime from which all the subsequent atrocities arose. They should face prosecution for waging a crime of aggression—the very charge used against Nazi war criminals in the Nuremberg trials after World War II.”

The World Socialist Web Site has repeatedly cited the Nuremberg precedent as applying to the actions of American administrations, from George W. Bush in Afghanistan and Iraq onward. There is no government in the world which is more steeped in “waging a crime of aggression” by unleashing war than that which resides in Washington, DC.

The Nuremberg Tribunal also convicted the main media apologists of the Nazi regime of war crimes. The editors of the Post, faithful advocates of every US military adventure, should be careful what they wish for.
