Israeli Army Shoots Cameraman

"Media advocacy groups condemned the shooting of a cameraman for Hamas TV who lay wounded on the ground when he came under more fire during a clash with Israeli troops.

"The incident, captured by TV cameras, took place Thursday during heavy fighting between Hamas militants and Israeli forces in central Gaza. The cameraman, Imad Ghanem, had to have both legs amputated as a result of his injuries.

"Israeli army spokeswoman Maj. Avital Leibowitch, has said it was not clear who shot Ghanem, a cameraman for the Hamas-allied Al Aqsa TV, though she did not deny it could have been Israeli troops. There are no plans to investigate, she said.

"Leibowitch said the cameraman was a legitimate target because he was with the Hamas gunmen firing at Israeli forces, was separated from other journalists covering the clash, and could have been carrying a weapon.

"The shooting was captured on film and broadcast on al-Jazeera satellite television, but the footage did not show who fired at Ghanem. However, Ghanem later said from his hospital bed the shots came from an Israeli tank.

"On Friday, the Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists condemned the shooting and called for an investigation.

"Two other media advocacy groups, the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, also have issued protests.

Tearing Down the Ghetto Walls--Tony Sayegh

"Yesterday I listened to Dr. Mona El-Farra from Gaza speak in person about the abysmal human conditions in the Gaza Strip as a result of the genocidal total blockade which has been in effect for more than a year now. This blockade is entering a more intensified and dangerous phase, since in addition to USrael, the EU, most Arab regimes and in particular Egypt, the Palestinian Karzai is now aggressively urging the continued closure of the Rafah crossing which is the only outlet the Gaza Strip has left to the outside world.

"Listening to Dr. El-Farra's words and watching her slides, you quickly realize that you are watching a holocaust unfolding in front of our eyes. This is no exaggeration, and the holocaust analogy has been used by many authors including Jewish authors such as Professor Richard Falk, Professor Emeritus of International Law and Practice at Princeton University. As Professor Falk put it in a recent piece, titled "Slouching toward a Palestinian holocaust", "The recent developments in Gaza are especially disturbing because they express so vividly a deliberate intention on the part of Israel and its allies to subject an entire human community to life-endangering conditions of utmost cruelty. The suggestion that this pattern of conduct is a holocaust-in-the-making represents a rather desperate appeal to the governments of the world and to international public opinion to act urgently to prevent these current genocidal tendencies from culminating in a collective tragedy. If ever the ethos of 'a responsibility to protect,' recently adopted by the UN Security Council as the basis of 'humanitarian intervention' is applicable, it would be to act now to start protecting the people of Gaza from further pain and suffering."

****

"About a year ago the Palestinians discovered the power of unarmed, civil collective action. Israel was calling various people in Gaza to warn them a few minutes in advance that their homes were selected to be destroyed by Israeli missiles and that they had to vacate their homes immediately. This practice continued until the people came up with an idea to resist this atrocity. As soon as a home owner got such a call from the IOF, calls went out to neighbors and to supporters. Crowds gathered in and around the house and in many cases on the roof of the house. The message was that if the IOF was going to destroy the house then it had to kill scores of civilians. This collective resistance worked in more than one occasion.

"This success should inspire the Palestinians in Gaza to come up with peaceful, creative mass-action ways to break the siege. An example comes to mind; it involves breaking the naval siege imposed by the Israeli navy on the Gaza coast. Volunteers from the group Women in Black will attempt to sail to Gaza in sailboats. They realize that the Israeli navy will prevent them from proceeding, but the objective is to expose the myth that Israel tries to perpetrate that it no longer occupies or controls Gaza.

Your Friendly, Neighborhood Arms Dealer

Militarizing domestic police work (mainly the "war on drugs) works well for the arms manufacturers. Outdated weapons can be sold to local police who then feel compelled to use it. Read the whole story here (portion below): http://www.slweekly.com/editorial/2007/cityweek_1_2007-07-05.cfm

"At the recent National Sheriff’s Association convention in the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, the triad of military technology, corporate manufacturing and law enforcement symbolized in RoboCop’s Ed-209 was more than just fiction.

"Besides six days of seminars on everything from in-custody deaths to character building, the annual gathering of sheriffs also acts as a marketplace for law-enforcement gadgetry. Everything was on offer in the exhibition hall: tracking devices, facial-recognition technology, communication networks, paddy wagons, riot gear, surveillance equipment and guns—lots of guns.

"But most conspicuous were the numerous permutations of America’s military machine—all at the disposal of the 6,000-plus sheriffs on hand. For example, Chris Kincaid, a senior consultant with the Department of Defense’s Technology Transfer Program, was present to aid law enforcement agencies with what he calls “technological transfer.” The federal program was set up in 2002 to aid the transfer of technology and equipment from the military to law enforcement.

"While much of the transferred equipment—such as medical supplies—is mundane, some of the items passed on to police by the DOD are much more militaristic. For example, 26 armored personnel carriers on loan in South America were returned to the U.S. military and sold to police departments across the country for use by their SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) teams, Kincaid says.

"This program, Kincaid says, continues what began in 1994 with the National Defense Authorization Act. The act made huge amounts of mothballed, Cold War military supplies available to local law enforcement, ostensibly for the war on drugs.

Scooter Libby Long-Serving Mossad (Israeli) Agent--Wayne Madsen

"Irving Lewis "Scooter" Libby (Leibowitz) has been a long-serving intelligence agent for Israel's Mossad, according to a veteran CIA "official cover" officer who spoke to the Wayne Madsen Report on deep background. The CIA's Clandestine Service has, over the years, gathered a tremendous amount of intelligence on Libby's activities on behalf of Mossad.

"Libby served as the lawyer for Switzerland- based American fugitive financier Marc Rich, aka Mark David Reich, who is also known to be an Israeli intelligence asset and someone Israel relies upon for missions that demand "plausible deniability" on the part of the Mossad. Rich heads up a worldwide empire of dummy corporations, foundations, and numbered bank accounts that have been involved in sanctions busting and weapons smuggling. The nations involved include Israel, United States, United Kingdom, Iran, Panama, Colombia, Russia, Iraq (under Saddam Hussein), Cuba, Spain, Nigeria, Singapore, Bolivia, Jamaica, Bermuda, France, Italy, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Australia, Argentina, Peru, Ireland, Zambia, Sw

"In 1983, the then-U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York urged jail time for Rich and his partner Pincus Green for racketeering. The name of that U.S. Attorney is Rudolph Giuliani. Giuliani, who is now running for president, praised Bush's decision to commute Libby's jail sentence. After Clinton 's pardon of Rich, Giuliani said he was "shocked." Paul Klebnikov, the Moscow editor for Forbes' Russian edition, wrote about the connections of Rich to Russian gangsters like Boris Berezovsky, a business partner of Neil Bush, in his book "Godfather of the Kremlin." Klebnikov was shot to death gangland-style on a Moscow street on July 9, 2004.

"Libby not only provided the Mossad with a top agent inside the White House but also an important conduit for the Russian-Israeli Mafia.

"Libby arranged for Rich's eleventh hour pardon by outgoing President Bill Clinton in January 2001. The pardon of Rich was urged in a phone call to Clinton by then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, as well as Shimon Peres and Ehud Olmert.

"Yesterday, Libby received a commutation of his 30-month prison sentence from President George W. Bush. Libby was convicted on four counts of perjury, lying to a federal law enforcement officer, and obstruction of justice in the investigation by U.S. Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald of the White House's leak to the media of the identity CIA non-official cover officer Valerie Plame Wilson.

"Libby was denied bail by U.S. Judge Reggie Walton and was ordered to prison while appealing his sentence. Libby was assigned Bureau of Prisons inmate number 28301-016.

"Libby worked for Paul Wolfowitz in the State Department's Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs from 1982 to 1985. Libby again worked for Wolfowitz in the Pentagon as the Principal Undersecretary for Strategy and Resources. Libby later became the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Policy and served as a chief aide to Defense Secretary Dick Cheney.

Untouchable Scooter Scoots as Conyers Blows Hot Air

From Another Day in the Empire, the reality of the Dems "opposition" to Bush's commutation. Read whole story here (portion below) http://kurtnimmo.com/?p=917:

“'We’re trying to examine the use and misuse of the clemency power and the commutation power and we’ll be examining it of all presidents because that’s the only way we can determine whether they’ve been used properly and whether there should be changes considered,” Conyers said as he yanked our chain. “We may be able to restrict it in some ways, but in addition to, we want everyone to be examining it,” in other words Conyers wants to change the Constitution. Of course, this is about as likely to happen as Bush doing the perp walk in a freshly starched orange jumpsuit.

"In response to Conyers’ hot air, ranking committee Republican Lamar Smith of Texas told Fox News: “I really on the whole think the Judiciary Committee has a lot better things to do than to spend time investigating what is a constitutional prerogative of any president, Republican or Democrat.” In other words, the Judiciary Committee, and Congress as a whole, should mind its business, that is to say attending to the business of transnational corporatism and the global elite, busy rendering the United States into a feudal plantation, sort of an Americanized version of the slave gulag in China.

"Meanwhile, “Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., announced he will introduce a censure resolution against Bush for his ‘egregious and politically-motivated commutation of Scooter Libby’s prison sentence’…. ‘This presidential intervention is an unconscionable abuse of authority by George W. Bush, and Congress must step forward and express the disgust that Americans rightfully feel toward this contemptible decision.’”

"Please, spare us the theatrics. Neocon Libby, who not only outed CIA agent Valerie Plame for her husband’s crime of telling the truth about the Saddam’s illusory yellowcake but is also an “egregious” war criminal par excellence, will skate and in six months, as the decider-commander guy approaches the end of his “term,” few will remember his name, let alone his crimes, most notably and opprobriously his prominent role in the methodical slaughter of more than 750,000 Iraqis, a total stacked upon Clinton’s supervision of killing off
1.5 million Iraqis, mostly helpless children, by way of “sanctions,”
that is to say a decade-long medieval siege.

"Don’t expect Conyers and the Judiciary Committee to take up discussion on genocide, as the lives of Iraqis are really quite insignificant in Washington. Instead, for the moment, we can expect our “representatives,” actually representing Wal-Mart and Halliburton, to continue making ludicrous comments, designed to assuage the outrage of average Americans, or a few anyway, who know a sweetheart deal when they see one, not that it particularly matters. In a week or two the Libby outrage will be paved over by the next dizzy antic of Britney Spears or a drunken American Idol contestant.

Blacks Don't Stand a Chance in Jena

Reminiscent of the black teenaged girl sentenced to (possibly) 7 years for allegedly pushing an adult school aide (who was not harmed), the young man in this story has received a very harsh sentence (to 20 years) for an alleged beating of a white student at his school. Whole story here: http://www.dissidentvoice.org/2007/07/blacks-dont-stand-a-change-in-jena/

"When Black students staged a protest under the tree at Jena High, LaSalle Parish District Attorney Reed Walters was called in. Appearing with police at an assembly, Walters reportedly warned Black students against any more “incidents,” allegedly telling them, “I can make your lives disappear with a stroke of my pen.”

"On December 4, the fight erupted that would lead to the charges against the Jena Six.
A group of Black students at the high school allegedly assaulted a white student, Justin Baker, on his way out of the gym, knocked him unconscious and kicked him after he hit the floor. Baker was reportedly a friend of the students who had hung the nooses, and some reports say he had been taunting Black students before the fight.

True to his word, the district attorney went on the attack, charging all six Black students–four as adults–and pushing for attempted murder charges, with maximum sentences of 100 years each. All six students were immediately expelled from school.

Later, the attempted murder charges were reduced to “aggravated battery.” But this charge is supposed to depend on the use of a dangerous weapon. Since there was no evidence that Bell or the other teens had a gun, knife or other weapon, Walters argued that the tennis shoes Bell was wearing at the time of the attack qualified as a “dangerous weapon.”

The trial that followed for Mychal Bell is all too typical of “justice” for Blacks in the U.S. today.
The jury that heard the case was all white, and took just three hours to convict Bell. The witnesses at the trial were all white. Trial Judge J.P. Mauffray Jr. ruled that the noose incident was irrelevant to the case and couldn’t be mentioned at trial, meaning that much of the original context of the fight was never heard.

Reports from witnesses at the trial suggest that Bell’s public defender, Blane Williams, was unprepared, and more interested in pushing for a plea deal than proving Bell’s innocence. He failed to put a single witness on the stand, or to present any evidence at all in Bell’s defense.
Williams failed to challenge the all-white composition of the jury, as well. He told the Associated Press that he was sure he could “get a fair trial” anyway.

Alan Bean, director of Friends of Justice, a Texas-based civil rights group, attended the trial and told the Associated Press, “Blane Williams did not want to go to trial, he was not prepared to go to trial, and he was angry when he was forced to go to trial. So he just sort of plowed ahead and decided to go through the motions.”

During the trial, several witnesses claimed they saw Bell struck the first blow in the assault–key to proving the charge against him. But other witnesses said that the white student struck first, and still others said they couldn’t tell who struck the first blow, or if Bell was even among the group of students–a clear indication that there should have been reasonable doubt as to whether Bell was guilty.

Now, Mychal Bell faces a 20-year sentence, five more young Black men will go on trial soon, and Black residents live each day in fear of racist violence. As Vivian Thompson, a friend of the Bell family, told the Alexandria-Pineville Town Talk, “Blacks do not stand a chance here. I want to see justice. This wasn’t it.”

Squalid Conditions in Some Private Prisons

Prisoners placed in private prisons are suffering deprivation on a massive scale. This story about a private prison in Texas shows what happened to one prisoner from Idaho who was sent there. One para from the article shows why: "The complaints have not hurt the company's balance sheet. It reported profits of $30 million in 2006, four times the amount reported in 2005."

Read the whole sad tale here: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/6420AP_Private_Prisons.html
At least the guy didn't die in vain. Apparently some of the conditions have improved after his testimony from the grave.

"It also raised questions about a company hired to operate prisons in 15 states, despite reports of abusive guards and terrible sanitation.

"Hundreds of pages of documents obtained by The Associated Press through an open-records request show Idaho did little monitoring of out-of-state inmates, despite repeated complaints from prisoners, their families and a prison inspector.

"More than 140,000 U.S. prison beds are in private hands, and inmates' rights groups allege many such penitentiaries tolerate deplorable conditions and skimp on services to increase profits.

"'They cut corners because the bottom line is making money," said Caylor Rolling, prison program director at Partnership for Safety and Justice in Portland, Ore., a group that promotes prison alternatives.

"Payne, 43, was placed in solitary confinement because he escaped from the prison in December by scaling a fence and eluding capture for a week.

"He was among Idaho inmates sent to the prison in Spur, Texas, run by a Florida-based company called the GEO Group. The business operates more than 50 prisons across the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa.

"Soon after Payne's suicide, the Idaho Department of Correction's health care director inspected the prison and declared it the worst facility he had ever seen. Don Stockman called Payne's cell unacceptable and the rest of the Dickens County Correctional Center "beyond repair."

CNN's Image Fetish--Mark Perry

CNN's Suzanne Malveaux on Hamas' "image" problem, as assessed by Mark Perry at the Conflicts forum. Portion below. Read it all here: http://conflictsforum.org/2007/cnns-image-fetish/

"But Suzanne, haven’t we already established that Hamas had not held Johnston? They couldn’t have released him 114 days earlier if they didn’t actually hold him. Or weren’t you listening? Didn’t you get that part? Or was it the “image” part that tripped you up? Or perhaps it’s their “sincerity” that you’re worried about. Okay, okay, sure Hamas released this guy Johnston, and maybe sure, they want law and order and all that other claptrap, but the real question is (and it’s one we all hang on and want to know the answer to) are they “sincere?” And then too, we need to know about what Haniyeh and Khalid Meshaal and all the rest of those fellas think about “the image beyond the image.” Gerges did his best, as if explaining it all once again: Hamas is a highly complex social movement he said (Suzanne began to drift, you could see it in her eyes), but they are highly disciplined. The movement, he said, may even be willing to make a historic compromise. “The challenge facing the international community particularly the United States and Israel [is] are they willing to engage the moderate and the mainstream political elements within Hamas?” Gerges said. “This is really the critical question.”

'This was the payoff — and a question that keeps being asked, and not just by Gerges, but by nearly every thinking Middle East analyst. But it seemed lost somehow on the single-minded can-we-get-back-to-the-image-bit Malveaux. She was in her it’s-a-wrap mode: “And surely Professor, another critical question is Hamas willing to recognize Israel as part of that image change, if you will? What do you think?” What did he think? You could almost read his mind: sure they would recognize Israel. Sure. But inside what borders? But that question would only confuse her. And by now, and you could see it, he was nearly ready to surrender. Ah, but not quite. “I agree 100 percent,” he said, but then he added, throwing his verbal grenade,“and this is why I believe that engagement rather than exclusion is the way to go. Let’s engage Hamas and see whether Hamas is willing to really make a historic compromise. And I think as you know the Bush administration and Israel and even the international community after last year elections they took the decision and boycotted Hamas and look where we are today.”

"Yes, look at where we are today — in which eleven Palestinians died in a “routine operation” in Gaza, in which two Americans were indicted for murdering innocent Iraqis, in which seventeen Iraqis were killed by a car bomb, and in which a leading anchor on “the world news leader” thinks that a movement that represents a people that are being regularly pulverized, butchered, eviscerated, crushed, manacled, hacked, gashed, shot, slashed, killed — and who are fighting every single day just to stay alive — should be concerned about their image. My God.

"Maybe Malveaux has a point.

"Maybe Hamas should hire Israel’s firm.

Guam Being Overrun by US Military

The indigenous people of Guam are objecting to the US military building up their presence on the island. As seen below, the land being used for militaristic purposes belongs to them, not the US. Read about the "new defense strategy" here (portion below): http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/C87350F6-6F90-408F-BDAC-6F44A6028C4C.htm

"The US is spending billions of dollars and moving troops in the Asia Pacific to strengthen bases in outlying US territories as part of a new defence strategy.

"The Pacific Island of Guam, previously considered a glorified refuelling base, has taken on a new importance to the US since September 11, 2001, and is currently being turned into a military hub.

"The build-up in Guam is expected to cost $15 bn, with almost two-thirds of it going towards relocating 8,000 marines from the US base in Okinawa, Japan.

"But the base in Guam, the United State's most western territory, is not reliant on support from a foreign country, like those in Japan and South Korea.

Immigration Raids Ripping Families Apart Here

Makes you so proud doesn't it? Right before 4th of July? Whole story here (portion below): http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003772316_iceraid03m.html

"Reyes-Velasquez was the Seattle team's second target that day.

"Outside her second-story apartment, officers knocked, identifying themselves as "police" and rousing her 20-year-old son, Carlos Quiroz, who'd been sleeping on a mattress on the other side of the door.

"Because he thought they were local police and not immigration officers, he said, he opened the door, and for his mother, "the life that I have came to a stop."

"In the living room, officers gathered the six adults and four children from throughout the apartment to sort out their immigration status.

"Reyes-Velasquez' 13-year-old daughter was distraught: "You're taking our mother away!" she cried.

"Neil Clark, Seattle-based field director for detention and removal operations, explained to the child, who was born in the United States, that she could go to Mexico with her mother if Reyes-Velasquez is deported.

"But the child was inconsolable: "I don't want to go to Mexico. I want my mom here."

"The girl and her 4-year-old sister stayed with two adults in the home who are U.S. citizens.

"Reyes-Velasquez was arrested. From an open window, her daughters watched as she was led in handcuffs to a waiting SUV.

"Her son, boyfriend and brother-in-law, all illegal immigrants who were in the home at the time, were also taken into custody — "collaterals," as the officers sometimes call them.

The Iraqi government has not and will never do anything for us.

One below my ribs and one in my back. I need surgery too.
But I am not important. My son is. How will I manage?
On my way here, highway bandits took all my money. I sold the
house to come here. Now I have nothing. The boy needs

Antizionist Jews at the White House

A President Besieged and Isolated, Yet at Ease[?!]

The Washington Post needs to move out of the Beltway. What unmitigated crap!!! If you can take it, the whole article is here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/01/AR2007070101356.html?hpid=topnews

"'You think about prime ministers and presidents being surrounded by cabinet officials and aides and so forth," said Alistair Horne, a British historian who met with Bush recently. "But at the end of the day, they're alone. They're lonely. And that's what occurred to me as I was at the White House. It must be quite difficult for him to get out and about."

"Friends worry about that as well. Burdened by an unrelenting war, challenged by an opposition Congress, defeated just last week on immigration, his last major domestic priority, Bush remains largely locked inside the fortress of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in the seventh year of a presidency turned sour. He still travels, making speeches to friendly audiences and attending summit meetings, such as this weekend's Kennebunkport talks with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. But he rarely goes out to dinner, and he no longer plays golf, except occasionally chipping at Camp David, where, as at his Texas ranch, he can find refuge.

"'I don't know how he copes with it," said Donald Burnham Ensenat, a friend for 43 years who just stepped down as State Department protocol officer. Rep. K. Michael Conaway (R-Tex.), another longtime friend who once worked for Bush, said he looks worn down. "It's a marked difference in his physical appearance," Conaway said. "It's an incredibly heavy load. When you ask men and women to take risks, to send them into war knowing they might not come home, that's got to be an incredible burden to have on your shoulders."

Mike Whitney: Another Great Depression?

I've gotten a little wary of Mike Whitney's proclamations about the
economic sky falling. He's been saying this for a couple of years.
However, I think the Bear Sterns hedge fund debacle and the
other things he talks about here really might be a signal that
the economy is ready to burst. Whole article here (portion below): http://globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=6209

"And, there’s a bigger fear on Wall Street than the fact that 2 hedge funds are headed into bankruptcy, that is, that a sudden tightening of credit will send the over-leveraged stock market into a downward spiral.

"The market is particularly sensitive to any rise in interest rates or tougher lending standards. It's become addicted to cheap credit and any break in the chain will cause equities to plummet.
Economist Henry C K Liu sums it up like this:

“The liquidity boom has been delivering strong growth through
asset inflation without adding commensurate substantive
expansion of the real economy. …. Unlike real physical
assets, virtual financial mirages that arise out of thin air
can evaporate again into thin air without warning.
As inflation picks up, the liquidity boom and asset
inflation will draw to a close, leaving a hollowed economy
devoid of substance. …A global financial crisis is inevitable”.
(Henry C K Liu “Liquidity boom and looming crisis” Asia Times)

"In other words, the “virtual” wealth of Wall Street is a chimera which was created by the Fed's inexorable expansion of debt. It can vanish in a flash if the sources of liquidity are cut off.

******Article Ends With This

"We should now be able to see the straight line that connects the Fed's low interest rates to the impending stock market meltdown. The problems began at the central bank.

"Presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) summed it up best when he said:

“From the Great Depression, to the stagflation of the seventies,
to the burst of the dot.com bubble; every economic downturn
suffered by the country over the last 80 years can be traced
to Federal Reserve policy. The Fed has followed a consistent
policy of flooding the economy with easy money, leading to
a misallocation of resources and artificial “boom” followed
by recession or depression when the Fed-created bubble bursts”.

Liberate With Extreme Prejudice: Another Civilian Slaughter in Afghanistan--Empire Burlesque

Chris Floyd reports on another bombing attack by NATO (I presume). Link here: http://www.chris-floyd.com/index.php

"While the Anglo-American media goes into hyperdrive over a pair of utterly bungled terrorist wannabe attacks in the UK, the actual, highly efficient slaughter of innocent civilians in Afghanistan by American forces continues at a frenzied pace.

"Dozens of Afghan civilians -- from 50 to 80 -- were killed in a three-hour bombing raid on the village of Hyderabad on Saturday, local officials of the American-backed Afgan government told the Observer. One man, Mohammed Khan, lost seven members of his family, including his brother and five of his brother's children, the paper reported.

"UPDATE: The civilian death count in the American-led asasault on Hyderabad continues to mount. It is now estimated that at least 100 civilians, and possibly more, were killed in the three-hour air attack. The sources for the latest death toll estimate are two members of the American-backed, American-installed Afghan parliament. Google Trying to Kill Universal Single-Payer Insurance?

You may have heard of Google's "do no evil" mission statement. Did they copy that from the mythical "first, do no harm" mantra of physicians? "The New York Times calls Sicko a “cinematic indictment of the American health care system.” The film is generating significant buzz and is sure to spur a lively conversation about health coverage, care, and quality in America. While legislators, litigators, and patient groups are growing excited, others among us are growing anxious. And why wouldn’t they? Moore attacks health insurers, health providers, and pharmaceutical companies by connecting them to isolated and emotional stories of the system at its worst. Moore’s film portrays the industry as money and marketing driven, and fails to show healthcare’s interest in patient well-being and care.

"Sound familiar? Of course. The healthcare industry is no stranger to negative press. A drug may be a blockbuster one day and tolled as a public health concern the next. News reporters may focus on Pharma’s annual sales and its executives’ salaries while failing to share R&D costs. Or, as is often common, the media may use an isolated, heartbreaking, or sensationalist story to paint a picture of healthcare as a whole. With all the coverage, it’s a shame no one focuses on the industry’s numerous prescription programs, charity services, and philanthropy efforts.

"Many of our clients face these issues; companies come to us hoping we can help them better manage their reputations through “Get the Facts” or issue management campaigns. Your brand or corporate site may already have these informational assets, but can users easily find them?

"We can place text ads, video ads, and rich media ads in paid search results or in relevant websites within our ever-expanding content network. Whatever the problem, Google can act as a platform for educating the public and promoting your message. We help you connect your company’s assets while helping users find the information they seek.

"If you’re interested in learning more about issue management campaigns or about how we can help your company better connect its assets online, email us. We’d love to hear from you! Setting up these campaigns is easy and we’re happy to share best practices.

"As for Sicko, all I can say is -- go easy on that buttered popcorn.
