13 Chase Banks Shut, 26 Arrested in Pipeline Protest
SEATTLE, Washington, May 8, 2017 (ENS) – Twenty-six activists were arrested today as local indigenous leaders and Seattle climate activists disrupted business at 13 Chase Bank branches across Seattle in a major escalation in their campaign to keep banks from funding projects catastrophic to the climate and to indigenous rights.
About 200 activists were involved in the 13 protests. At two of the bank branches, several activists locked
themselves together and refused to leave, said Emily Johnston, communications manager for 350 Seattle, a nonprofit that organized the demonstration.

JP Morgan Chase is one of the biggest funders of tar sands development, the activists say.
The bank did not respond to activists’ demand two weeks ago that it issue a statement indicating that it would not fund TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline, or any other new tar sands infrastructure.
The same group helped to lead the successful fight in February to persuade the City of Seattle to take its money out of the Wells Fargo bank due to funding of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
“We have to withdraw our consent from business as usual,” says Valerie Costa of 350 Seattle. The nonprofit aims to keep the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere below 350 parts per million. The concentration hit 400 ppm last year.
“We know that if we stay on the path we’re on, it ends in disaster. Today we showed one way that people can withdraw consent,” Costa said.
“Chase’s money is funding these fossil fuel projects,” said Northern Cheyenne Water Protector Ray Kingfisher. “They are killing and poisoning our children, our animals, our water, and our land. We need to stand for our rights and those of our future generations.”
The Keystone XL pipeline, rejected by President Barack Obama, was greenlighted by President Donald Trump on March 24. But it still has no project-level loans, and activists say it’s not too late to stop the project.
They point out that with a climate denier in office, they have to take the fight straight to the funders, and they say that they intend to make this project as toxic politically as it is toxic for the planet.
Seattle City Councilmember Mike O’Brien was part of today’s resistence action. “I’m taking part in this action to make it crystal clear to Chase – if the bank finances KXL or other tar sands projects, the City of Seattle will not do business with it,” he said.
“Today was a success. We shut down banks and showed Chase that we’re not going to tolerate these toxic projects,” said Muckleshoot tribal member Rachel Heaton.
The entire action was live-streamed, with anchors narrating the process and explaining why they believe it’s essential to stop business as usual, especially with regard to new tar sands infrastructure.
Speaking of the banks’ stakes in the pipelines, 350 Seattle’s Ahmed Gaya said, “It’s a relatively small percentage of their overall portfolio. If you can make that very small part … have a vastly disproportionate effect on their public image, that’s very persuasive.”
Activists also pointed out that investors are currently being courted for funding of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline, a controversial oil pipeline that carries crude and refined oil from Alberta to the west coast of British Columbia. The say this tar sands pipeline is also devastating to indigenous rights and the climate.
In November 2016, the Canadian government approved Kinder Morgan Canada’s plan to expand the existing Trans Mountain Pipeline system between Edmonton, Alberta, and Burnaby, British Columbia. The $7.4 billion pipeline runs parallel to the existing line. Oil producers say it is needed to get crude oil to export markets.
The project is opposed by tribes as well as environmental, conservation and wildlife interests on both sides of the border. There would be a sevenfold increase in tanker traffic through the Strait of Juan de Fuca and into BC’s Burrard Inlet if the pipeline is built.
The activists hope that actions like today’s can help to make banks reconsider the calculus of financing such projects.
“They have to care about their reputations,” Costa says of the banks, “because that’s their bottom line.”

On his recent visit to the US, Netanyahu articulated his future vision.
“Israel must retain the overriding security control over the entire area west of the Jordan River,” he said.
Writing in the ‘Nation’, Professor Rashid Khalidi expounded the true meaning of Netanyahu’s statement.
By uttering these words, “Netanyahu proclaimed a permanent regime of occupation and colonization, ruling out a sovereign independent Palestinian state, whatever fiction of ‘statehood’ or ‘autonomy’ are dreamed up to conceal this brutal reality,” he wrote.
“Trump’s subsequent silence amounts to the blessing of the US government for this grotesque vision of enduring subjugation and dispossession for the Palestinians.”
Why then, should Palestinians be quiet?
Their silence can only contribute to this gross reality, the painful present circumstances, where Palestinians are perpetually imprisoned under an enduring Occupation, while their ‘leadership’ receives both a nod of approval from Israel and accolades and more funds from Washington.
It is under this backdrop that the hunger strike becomes far more urgent than the need to improve the conditions of incarcerated Palestinians.
It is a revolt within Fatah against their disengaged leadership, and a frantic attempt by all Palestinians to demonstrate their ability to destabilize the Israeli-American-PA matrix of control that has extended for many years.
“Rights are not bestowed by an oppressor,” wrote Marwan Barghouti from his jail on the first day of the hunger strike.
In truth, his message was directed at Abbas and his cronies, as much as it was directed at Israel.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- A number of Palestinians were injured, some with live fire, while others were detained by Israeli forces as clashes erupted across the occupied West Bank on Thursday, the 11th day of the “Freedom and Dignity” hunger strike.
The clashes came one day before what is supposed to be a Day of Rage on April 28, called for by the Fatah movement, during which Palestinians are expected to clash with Israeli forces in order to show their solidarity with the Palestinian prisoners’ movement.
Hundreds of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel have been participating in the hunger strike led by senior Fatah official Marwan Barghouthi since April 17 to protest the torture, ill treatment, and medical neglect of prisoners at the hands of Israeli authorities, as well as Israel’s widespread use of administrative detention -- internment without trial or charges.
Ramallah district
Nine Palestinians were injured, including six with live fire and three with rubber-coated steel bullets, during clashes that erupted near the Beit El military checkpoint at the northern entrance of al-Bireh city in the central occupied West Bank.
Locals told Ma’an that one youth was injured with live fire in the stomach and foot, another was injured with two live bullets in the back and leg, while four others with injured with live fire in the legs.
Three youths were injured with rubber-coated steel bullets, including one youth with an injury to the face.
Clashes erupted at the checkpoint, located next to the illegal Israeli settlement of Beit El, between Palestinian youths and Israeli forces. Palestinian youths threw rocks as soldiers opened live fire, rubber-coated steel bullets and tear-gas on the youth.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces detained five Palestinians, including an injured youth, on during clashes near the Ofer prison in western Ramallah.
Clashes erupted between Palestinian youths and Israeli forces following a march in solidarity with hunger-striking prisoners.
Israeli forces fired rubber-coated steel bullets and tear-gas bombs while youths threw rocks at armed forces.
Five unidentified Palestinians, one of whom locals said was an injured youth, were assaulted by Israeli forces and taken into Ofer detention center.
An Israeli army spokesperson said they were looking into reports of the clashes and detentions.
Bethlehem district
In the town of Tuqu, located southeast of Bethlehem city in the southern West Bank, hundreds of Palestinians marched in solidarity with hunger-striking prisoners.
The march, led by masked youths, went through the streets of the town, with protesters holding signs of support prisoners.
Speeches delivered during the march by town leaders stressed on supporting prisoners and Palestinian national unity.
Youths set fire to tires when the march arrived to the Tuqu municipality and threw rocks at Israeli soldiers deployed in the area.
Clashes erupted in several sites across the town afterwards, with Israeli soldiers opening live fire, rubber-coated steel bullets and tear-gas bombs onto protesters.
An Israeli army spokesperson said they were looking into reports.

‘On Contact With Chris Hedges’: Putting the War in Syria in Full Context

Blumenthal is blunt as he warns, “If Syria is finally smashed apart, we will see the release of the monster of all monsters.”

It’s been more than a week since the Trump administration abruptly switched out of “America first” mode and into intervention mode by dropping 59 Tomahawk missiles on a Syrian airfield. As Chris Hedges and Alternet journalists Max Blumenthal and Ben Norton argue in this episode of “On Contact With Chris Hedges,” the American public has been lacking something very important before—and after—that strike.
Simply put, that would be context. More specifically, it comes down to crucial questions that are not being addressed publicly by members of the U.S. government or the mainstream media.
Take these questions, for example: What’s the relationship between the regime change in Libya, encouraged and enabled by the Obama administration in 2011, and the ongoing refugee crisis? Or between that crisis and Brexit? Who are the White Helmets? How are all these questions related to the current conflict in Syria, and the role of the U.S. in that conflict? What role do Iran and Saudi Arabia, in addition to Russia, play in Washington’s stance toward Syrian President Bashar Assad?
Hedges opens the discussion by pointing to the contextual vacuum that American media outlets and government officials aren’t in a hurry to fill. He notes how U.S.-backed campaigns for regime change “have a long history.”
Norton, who reports for Alternet’s Grayzone project with Blumenthal, remarks that there has been “no independent international corroboration” of the official Western account that the Syrian government was behind the alleged lethal gassing of Syrian civilians on April 4, which spurred Trump to order military action.
Below, watch Hedges and his guests connect the dots about “The Uncivil War,” as the episode is titled:
