Leaked U.S. diplomatic cables show that most of the 200 U.S. tactical nuclear bombs still left in Europe are based in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Turkey. The four nations have long been suspected of hosting the warheads, but NATO and the governments involved have always refused to formally confirm the suspicions.

Italy and Britain also are believed to house dozens of nuclear bombs, but they were not named in the WikiLeaks report.

The Dutch cabinet is refusing to comment on the possible presence of nuclear weapons in the Netherlands, following revelations by whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks.

There have been suspicions for years that US nuclear weapons are stationed at the Volkel airbase, in the east of the Netherlands around 25 kilometres from the German border. There has never been an official confirmation. But in WikiLeaks documents leaked since Sunday, a US diplomat confirms the presence of the nuclear weapons.

The opposition Dutch Socialist Party and Green Left party have called on the government to admit that there are US nuclear weapons on Dutch soil. But Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has said categorically that he would not be commenting. The conservative VVD minister told parliament “We make no statements on the presence or absence of nuclear weapons.”
