RALLY IN SUPPORT OF EGYPTIANS: Saturday January 29 12 to 3 p.m at Westlake Park in Downtown Seattle (4th & Pine)
Egyptians, Arab American and other Peace and Justice loving people are rallying in support of the Egyptian people as they protest economic and political oppression in Egypt.
We support Egyptians call for economic and political freedoms in Egypt. We also call on the United States government to not only stop their support of the current repressive regime but also support Egyptians’ call for democracy. We hope broader media of the oppression in Egypt will lead to a better understanding by the American public and politicians as to what’s happening not only in Egypt but also throughout the Middle East.
In short, we aim for
· Broader coverage and media exposure of the failures of the current government in Egypt and the corruption of the Mubarak government and their cronies
· Greater awareness: we want the American public to better understand the oppression and human rights violations in Egypt and the Middle East.
· Political Support: we ask the United States government to not support oppressive regimes in Egypt and throughout the Middle East.
Below are some facts on the Mubarak regime in Egypt and for what the Egyptian people protesting. Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians – Muslims and Christians protesting side by side – have mobilized throughout Egypt. These demonstrations are unprecedented and extremely brave due to Mubarak’s severe repercussions for participating in demonstrations.
Facts about the oppressive regime in Egypt:
· President Mubarak has been in power for 30 years, and wants to have his son “inherit the presidency” when he passes.
· Mubarak’s party - National Democratic Party - has a consistent track record of fraudulent and rigged parliamentary and presidential elections.
· A state of emergency has been enforced for 30 years allowing the government to suspend basic rights such as prohibiting demonstrations, censoring newspapers, monitoring personal communications, and detaining people indefinitely without charge.
· Economic benefit and special favors are showered upon beneficiaries of the regime depriving the rest of the population from the ability to improve their livelihoods.
What Egyptians want:
· President Mubarak to leave Egypt so fair elections can be held
· Freedom – of speech, press, personal communication, religion…
· Equal rights for all
· Lifting of the state of emergency
· Tangible economic improvement – roughly 30% live in poverty
