WASHINGTON -- Northwest members of Congress are hailing a report by a high-level commission that urged an immediate diplomatic attempt to stabilize Iraq and allow withdrawal of most combat troops by early 2008.
"This unanimous, bipartisan report shows that we need to change course in Iraq," said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. "What the Bush administration is doing today is not working."
Murray and other lawmakers said the release of the report - and the confirmation Wednesday of new Defense Secretary Robert Gates - signal the beginning of a real change of course in Iraq.
"Current policy is not working, and we need an honest and realistic look at where we are in Iraq," said Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore. "There are no easy choices, but the consequences of letting Iraq drift into chaos only magnify our challenges in the larger war on terror, a war from which we retreat at our peril."
Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., called for "more robust diplomatic and political efforts in Iraq and the region," adding that the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group "clearly indicate that a change of course is needed."
