"Olmert is not a moderate. While mayor of Jerusalem, hedenied services to Palestinian taxpayers in the occupiedeastern sector and encouraged Israelis to settle there. The leaders he admires are Menachem Begin, founder of theterrorist Irgun and the extreme right Herut party, andYitzhak Shamir, a chief of the Stern gang, anotherterrorist formation. While Likud prime minister, Beginmade peace with Egypt by pulling out of Sinai, but Shamirrefused to negotiate seriously with the Palestiniansfollowing the 1991 Madrid peace conference and said hewould keep fruitless talks going for 10 years while heexpanded colonies in the West Bank and Gaza."
THE ABOVE ARTICLE OPENS WITH THIS PARAGRAPH:
"Yesterday the Guardian carried a pointed cartoon by resident artist Steve Bell. It showed an Israeli tank storming the Jericho prison, Palestinian flag flying from the wall. On the back of the tank was written: “Vote Olmert”, and troops inside observed, “We have reason to believe this prison is not very secure”, as cannon fire breached the wall."
I'm sure Ehud Olmert (the acting Prime Minister of Israel since Sharon's stroke) is someone Bush and the Dems can "do business with."
EVEN THE NYTIMES SEES THE TREACHERY IN THE JERICHO RAID:
"Mr. Olmert may have secured a few security points forhimself and his Kadima Party in their battle with BenjaminNetanyahu over who will be elected to succeed Ariel Sharonas Israel's prime minister. But it's a sure bet that evenif his prison raid helps Mr. Olmert in the elections, itwill make the job of governing and steering Israelis andPalestinians toward peace even harder after the electionis done. For that, he can thank his friends in Britain andAmerica."
